The Sudbury Federal Building was located at the corner of Elm and
Durham Streets in Sudbury, from 1915 until 1959, when it was
demolished and replaced by a five story Woolworths building. My
depiction is at circa 1948; the year of my birth. I did this to predate the
end of the steetcars in Sudbury; the last run was October 3 1950. I
wanted to include one of our historical streetcars without covering the
building. I also stretched the view to the right on Durham street to
include the original location of Woolworths, which eventually occupied
the corner. The Woolworths building was subsequently demolished in
1998 to provide a parking lot for a Toronto Dominion Bank complex on
Elm street.
One of my motivations in doing this painting is to keep the public aware
of the historical architecture which has been systematically removed
through political expediency with no regard for it's historical heritage or
cultural value. This building would have made a grand centerpiece as
an Arts Centre in a downtown core which needs to attract it's citizens
back
